San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Charming Places, English, Lifestyle

Hello Pijolows!

Today I want to show you one of my favorite places and I encourage everyone to visit if they are in the Basque Country and it is none other than San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

This place is located between Bakio and Bermeo, is a cone-shaped islet connected to the mainland by a bridge of two arches. On the island there is a hermitage dedicated to San Juan (Saint John), but to get there you have to climb the 241 stairs zigzagging on the way up.

Once up you can see a spectacular landscape with views of the Cantabrian Sea, plagued by small islands, cliffs, tunnels and arches which is a landscape worthy of photographing around the hermitage.

You do not have to forget to touch the chapel’s bell three times and ask for a wish, the legend says they are fulfilled. As an anecdote, do not touch it 15 times as the family I saw… I do not know what blog they would have read but besides being 6 people and each playing 15 times the bell with their respective video for Instagram I think they exhausted the wishes of the Day and they were the laughing of all those present, they were so concentrated counting the bells that nobody dared to say anything to them. It must be said that all the others that happened before they touched three times, but stubbornness has no remedy.

I leave here some photos and a video to enjoy the views and encourage you to go there.聽
